Jefferson on ice
Dreams really can come true!
William Jefferson, D, LA, has lost his Congressional seat. Thanks to HotAir, among others, for the update. His replacement, Anh Cao, is Congress’s first member of Vietnamese descent. He normally goes by Joseph.
Looks like the “culture of corruption” charge that Democrats levelled at Republicans in 2006 is coming home to roost. Washington Post had n excellent account of his misadventures.
Federal investigators are targeting the Democratic congressman, 58, for allegedly demanding cash and other favors for himself and relatives, in exchange for using his congressional clout to arrange African business deals.
At the time, the case was noteworthy because the FBI seized documents in the House member’s office. They found $90,000 in a freezer. I’m sure Jefferson had a good explanation. Here’s a copy of the search warrant, courtesy NPR. Or TalkingPointsMemo, if you don’t like NPR.
So, just for the record, while Tom Delay left the House because of charges, and Bob Ney gave up a committee chairmanship, Jefferson stayed in office, and even won his 2006 reelection. Just like John Murtha survived the ABSCAM scandal.
But hey, at least the President-Elect is clean.
